Burn Injury

Being the victim of a burn, whether minor or severe, can be one of the worst injuries an individual can endure. Gabriel Assaad has gained years of experience dealing with burn injury cases in Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland.

A burn is a result of exposure to heat, cold, electricity, chemicals, light, radiation or friction that causes an injury or other damages. Depending on the location and severity of the burn, there are a number of potentially fatal complications including shock, infection, electrolyte imbalance and respiratory distress. Psychological and emotional distress may also become a concern due to the scarring and deformity of the burned area.

Burns are classified under four different degrees:

  • First-degree burns are usually limited to redness, a white plaque and minor pain at the injury site. These burns only involve the epidermis. (i.e. sunburns)
  • Second-degree burns are determined by redness with superficial blistering of the skin, and can involve more or less pain depending on the level of nerve involvement. They involve the superficial dermis and may also involve the deep dermis layer.
  • Third-degree burns occur when the epidermis is lost with damage to the subcutaneous tissue. Burn victims will have charring and extreme damage to the epidermis, and black dead tissue may be present. Third-degree burns result in scarring and loss of hair shafts and keratin. Grafting may be required.
  • Fourth-degree burns damage muscles, tendons, and ligament tissues. The hypodermis experiences charring and catastrophic damage. Grafting is required.

Exposure to chemicals, friction, electricity, radiation, and extreme temperatures are some of the most common causes of burn injuries. According to the United States Fire Administration, fires kill about 500 children under the age of 14 each year and injure 40,000 other children. In children 14 and under, the most common causes of burn injuries are hair curlers, curling irons, room heaters, ovens, irons, gasoline and fireworks.
