Erb's palsy is a paralysis of the arm caused by injury to the upper group of the arm's main nerves. The paralysis can resolve itself over a period of months or may require physical therapy and/or surgery, depending on the severity of the damage. An abnormal birth or difficult labor is the most common cause for Erb's palsy.
The injury can leave patients with impaired growth in their arms from the shoulder down to the fingertips, resulting in a smaller and weaker arm. Muscular, nervous and circulatory development are also hindered, the lack of muscular development may lead to the patient's inability to lift their affected arm. The circulatory system regulates body temperature, which requires the patient to pay particular attention to the affected arm to ensure the temperature is not falling below the rest of the body. Along with the body temperature, the skin will lose much of its healing ability and infections are more likely to occur.
