Surgical Errors
Dealing with medical malpractice cases can prove to be intimidating and strenuous for the victim, partially because of the devastating consequences that occur as a result of medical malpractice and/or negligence. Gabriel Assaad has the experience required to help you work through the ins and outs of your case. He has an extensive background of dealing with medical malpractice cases in Washington D.C., Virginia and Maryland.
Surgical errors, although only turning up 25 or 30 times each year, can completely change the course of someone’s life. They are listed among the “never events”, incidences that should never take place in a healthcare setting under any circumstances. However, with such an extensive increase in surgeries each year, the number of surgical errors is bound to increase as well. Surgical errors appear in many forms:
- Medication overdoses
- Drug errors
- Anesthesia overdoses
- Misreading medical chart/history
- Improper medical clearance for surgery
- Giving a patient the wrong blood type
- Failing to review medical instructions
- Scalpel slips, cutting into nearby organs
- Failure to diagnose and treat a post-operative infection
Before going into surgery, there are some steps a patient can take to lower the chances of a surgical error. Talking with the surgeon and determining his/her familiarity with the procedure will not only make the patient feel more comfortable, but family and friends as well. It is a standard practice for surgeons to mark their initials directly on the site of surgery, it should be marked by the surgeon and not his/her assisting staff. Right before the surgery, the patient should confirm the site with the surgeon to ensure no miscommunications occurred during the examinations and tests. Performing these simple but critical steps will greatly reduce a patient’s chance of becoming a surgical error victim.
